Bangladesh Air Force marked its 54th founding anniversary Sunday with ceremonies across military installations. The service began operations during the 1971 Liberation War when independence fighters established the aerial combat unit. Air Vice Marshal Abdul Karim Khandker and Air Vice Marshal Sultan Mahmud led the original formation alongside 55 other personnel. The initial fleet consisted of one Otter aircraft, one Dakota plane and one Alouette helicopter.
The unit conducted more than 50 combat missions against opposing forces during the independence conflict. Documentary screenings and religious observances took place at bases worldwide, including peacekeeping missions. Officials hosted ceremonial meals for current personnel and retired leadership at the Tejgaon facility in Dhaka.
