Bangladesh minority artists face crackdown over Durga Puja

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council voiced concern on Wednesday over the interim government's plan to take legal action against artists, priests, and organizers involved in creating idols for 793 Durga Puja pandals across the country. Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury made the announcement, stating that artists face accusations of hurting religious sentiments during the recent festival. The council highlighted the filing of general diaries at police stations and the launch of state investigations into these incidents.

The rights body stated that for decades, artists have used various forms to symbolize evil, and this year followed the same practice. The council warned that statements from officials could increase the risk of harassment and violence against minorities. The group urged the interim government to stop using legal measures as a means of oppression. It also called on civil society and humanitarian groups to speak out against actions targeting minority communities, as violence against minorities has been rising under the current administration.
