Barbara Creecy backs plan to extend SA licence terms

South Africa's transport minister has endorsed a proposal to increase the validity period of standard driving licenses from five to eight years, a change designed to reduce administrative burdens at testing centers and align with international practices. Barbara Creecy confirmed that amendments will be submitted to parliament for approval, offering relief to motorists who have endured lengthy queues and frequent renewals under the current system.

The reform follows research indicating that many countries with strong road safety records maintain longer validity periods without compromising driver standards. However, professional drivers operating taxis, buses and commercial vehicles may continue facing shorter renewal cycles of two to five years because of heightened safety concerns and the need for regular medical assessments.

The initiative comes as authorities work to clear a backlog exceeding 700,000 license cards created when the sole production machine experienced extended failures. Until legislative changes take effect, all drivers must continue renewing under the existing five-year requirements.
