Barzani lectures media about his old cave radio

President Masoud Barzani marked the 62nd anniversary of Voice of Kurdistan Radio on Saturday. He praised the station for carrying Kurdish revolutionary messages worldwide during the independence struggle. The radio began broadcasting in 1963 from Sardeman cave in Shinawa village during the Eylul Revolution. General Mustafa Barzani established the station to counter Iraqi government propaganda and boost fighter morale.

The station expanded beyond Kurdish and Arabic programming in 1968. Assyrian language broadcasts joined the lineup through advocacy by Franso Hariri and other community leaders. This multicultural approach reflected broader values of inclusion within the Kurdish movement. The radio served Assyrian audiences across Iraq, Iran and neighboring regions.

The historic cave site undergoes renovation by the Generation of Eylul Revolution organization. Workers build roads, install electricity and plant trees for visitor access. Barzani called on current journalists to maintain the station's founding principles of honest reporting and democratic values.
