Beitbridge border shut as gas tanker scare halts South Africa, Zimbabwe traffic

Authorities closed the Beitbridge border crossing between South Africa and Zimbabwe on Monday after discovering an unattended liquid petroleum gas tanker. The vehicle sat abandoned at a Shell service station near the international checkpoint. Officials feared the tanker might explode and immediately suspended all cross-border traffic. Emergency teams arrived to assess the dangerous situation. Workers began planning to move the gas into a different container.

Memory Ndou from South African Revenue Services confirmed the safety threat to border agencies. She stated that emergency crews would transfer the hazardous material at 15:30 that afternoon. The closure affected vehicles on both sides of the frontier. Traffic jams extended back to Matombo on the South African side while Zimbabwean authorities also stopped movement. This represents the second gas-related emergency at Beitbridge within recent weeks, raising questions about safety protocols at Africa's busiest land border crossing.
