Beitbridge kids stranded after smuggling task force stops school bus

Officers stranded a bus full of kids over a wild smuggling hunch. An anti-smuggling task force stopped a bus carrying fifty-five schoolchildren near Beitbridge. The vehicle was transporting pupils to Chibi High School in Masvingo Province. A task force leader named Honest Bote allegedly accused the bus of carrying undeclared goods. He ordered it to return to Beitbridge despite seeing the children in uniform.

The crew insisted the luggage only contained the children's personal items. They drove to a police station to request a formal search in front of officers. Bote later instructed police to release the bus without any search. This admission followed the realization that a significant error had been made.

The unnecessary detour added two hundred kilometers to the trip. This incurred unplanned fuel costs and double toll fees for the transporter. Parents braved heavy rains to reach their distressed children at the police station. They expressed fury over the officials accusing schoolchildren of smuggling activities.

One parent questioned how an officer could confuse children with adult smugglers. Another stated the irresponsible act damaged public trust in leadership. The anti-smuggling task force was originally formed during pandemic-related travel restrictions. It aimed to curb the smuggling of beer and cigarettes into South Africa.
