BioWare said it was closing and canceled Mass Effect 5

BioWare is closing after 30 years, and Mass Effect 5 has been canceled. Electronic Arts, the studio's parent firm, plans a small round of staff cuts as well. Yep, fans of these classic RPGs have had a lot of bad news to take in.

For many players, BioWare was a big deal. The Canadian studio gave them Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Its work on Star Wars led to Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic. Fans loved the deep plots, tough choices, and chance to form bonds with game characters.

Behind the closure sits a major shift at EA. A group of private buyers paid about $55 billion for the firm. Saudi Arabia's state wealth fund took part in the deal, along with an investment firm run by Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law.

Cam Weber and David Tinson, two senior EA chiefs, said the choice to close BioWare was far from easy. They gave the studio credit for its role in RPG history. Still, the firm has plans to cut costs, and some staff members may lose their jobs.

The loss of Mass Effect 5 is a hard one for fans. Work on the game had barely begun, but the first three entries had set a high bar. Players loved the space tale, its vast game world, and the cast. Critics gave that run high marks as well.

Meanwhile, Baldur's Gate 3 shows how big this style of RPG can get. Larian Studios made that hit, not BioWare. Sales went past 10 million copies, while its deep character bonds drew fans in. The game kept many of the traits that made this genre such a hit.

As for BioWare's last note to fans, the team chose to honor what players had made of its games. Their love for the cast, chats about key choices, and care for each tale had helped give those titles a life far past the screen. A sad day for a studio with quite a legacy.
