Supermassive Games recently scrapped plans for a Blade Runner video game, according to Insider Gaming. The studio behind The Quarry had started work on a project called Blade Runner: Time To Live last September.
The game would have taken players to the year 2065 as a replicant named So-Lange. Players would start in New Zurich with orders to hunt down Rev, the leader of an underground replicant group. After facing betrayal, the main character would need to survive hostile environments. Gameplay features might have let players upgrade various skills as they progressed through the story.
The studio planned this action-adventure game to last between 10 and 12 hours. It aimed to mix deep themes from the Blade Runner world with exciting gameplay. The project had entered pre-production with hopes to finish that phase by March 2025 and complete prototyping six months later.
The canceled game had a $45 million budget plan with $9 million set aside for actors and performance capture. The team planned to release it around September 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. They even considered versions for next-generation consoles that haven't been announced yet.
Reports blame Alcon, the Blade Runner IP owner, for the cancellation, though we may never know the full story. Fans of the Blade Runner universe can still look forward to Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth from Annapurna Interactive, which has been in development since 2022.
