BNP purges 7000 as Tarique cracks down on extortion

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders removed nearly 7,000 members after Sheikh Hasina's government collapsed during August protests. Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman implemented zero tolerance measures against extortion, corruption and vandalism within party ranks. Officials expelled 800 core party members while suspending 50 others from leadership positions. The disciplinary actions target misconduct across all affiliated organizations.

Student wing Chhatra Dal expelled 400 activists and issued warnings to 600 additional members. Youth organizations faced similar purges as leaders addressed criminal behavior and factional disputes. Party officials suspended new member recruitment to prevent opportunistic individuals from joining during the political transition. Local commanders established unauthorized power bases after the government changed.

BNP announced strict candidate selection criteria for February parliamentary elections. Leaders with questionable backgrounds will not receive party nominations regardless of their influence or connections. Rahman warned that victory depends on maintaining public trust through clean candidates. The party aims to cooperate with interim authorities while preventing destabilizing activities.
