Bobi Wine to Run for President in Uganda's Upcoming Election Against Museveni

Opposition leader Bobi Wine will compete for Uganda's presidency against longtime ruler Yoweri Museveni. The National Unity Platform announced Wine submitted paperwork to run in elections scheduled for January. Wine's real name is Robert Kyagulanyi and he works as both a musician and politician. The party secretary general said members will support Wine's campaign for political change. Museveni has ruled the East African country for almost 40 years.

The 80-year-old president announced plans to seek another term in office earlier this week. Opposition groups face increasing pressure from government forces who arrest and intimidate their members. Wine previously ran against Museveni during the 2021 election that critics said was unfair. Security forces used violence and voting problems occurred throughout that contest. Museveni's son has made death threats against Wine on social media platforms.

Government authorities have stepped up attacks on opposition politicians recently. Security forces kidnapped veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye from Kenya last year. Officials brought him back to Uganda where he faces treason charges that could result in execution. International human rights organizations have criticized the legal case against Besigye. Wine has been arrested multiple times for his political activities and criticism of the government.
