Bombay High Court acquits all 12 in 2006 Mumbai train blasts after 19 years

The Bombay High Court reversed convictions for twelve defendants previously found guilty in the 2006 Mumbai train attacks. Justice Anil Kilor and Justice S. Chandak delivered the verdict that overturned death penalties for five men and life sentences for seven others. Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep Gharat described the decision as completely shocking. The court ordered immediate release of all defendants who had served nearly twenty years in prison. Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam termed the acquittals a serious matter that requires an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Seven coordinated blasts struck Mumbai local trains during evening rush hour on July 11, 2006. The explosions occurred within eleven minutes using pressure cookers filled with RDX and ammonium nitrate. First-class compartments bore the brunt of the attack that killed 189 commuters and wounded more than 800 others. The Anti-Terrorism Squad had originally charged thirteen suspects under stringent terrorism laws. Victims' families expressed devastation after waiting nearly two decades for justice.
