Bonjour, Before ABC, Uganda's New Lingual Nightmare

Language teachers across Uganda want the government to start teaching French to young kids. The Alliance Française Kampala group leads this campaign for better education. They believe students who learn French early will have more job chances later. These educators visited schools around Masaka City to spread their message. Primary school students need this language skill to compete worldwide.

French classes happen at some high schools right around the country. Teachers argue that waiting until teenage years makes learning much harder for students. Alliance Française Kampala launched visits to St Henry's College Kitovu and other local schools. Their team wants to check how French teaching works at each location. School leaders welcomed these language experts during their important visits.

Karim Cwinya'ay from Alliance Française Kampala explained that French opens doors to international careers. More than one thousand Ugandans currently study this European language at different levels. Some schools have stopped offering French classes because of money problems and staff shortages. Students should see French as a life skill rather than just another test subject. The Ministry of Education needs to make French required learning from elementary school.

Students at both schools showed excitement about learning French through songs and drama activities. The girls at St Theresa Secondary School especially enjoyed their language lessons. Teachers reported that students work hard despite facing various classroom challenges. Alliance Française Kampala plans to visit more schools across Uganda during the coming months. This nationwide campaign will provide teacher training and learning materials to interested schools.
