BSCIC's industrial estate renovation project is at risk of missing the deadline

A major construction project faces serious trouble as workers scramble to finish before time runs out. The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation started fixing up eight industrial areas across the country. Government officials spent over 814 crore taka on the massive job. The project was supposed to wrap up by December 2025 but problems keep piling up. Management mistakes and poor planning have put the whole thing at risk.

Workers have finished about 79 percent of the actual building work. Three locations in Mymensingh, Jamalpur and Narsingdi are completely done. The other five spots still need major work to bring them up to standard. Officials have only spent about 60 percent of the total budget despite making good progress. Road building and drainage work have moved forward at several sites.

The project suffers from a shortage of skilled workers and engineers. Only 13 people fill the 16 approved jobs meant to oversee everything. Just two civil engineers work in the field across all eight locations. None of the sites have a full-time engineer watching the construction work. Quality problems have shown up at several locations where concrete work failed basic tests.

Auditors found financial problems worth over 4 crore taka between 2020 and 2023. The original plan lacked proper engineering designs and realistic timelines. Heavy rains and flooding have slowed down work at multiple sites. Officials worry the finished buildings might not last without better supervision and maintenance planning.
