Bulawayo teen blows mom's savings on spree

A Zimbabwean teenager admitted stealing combined foreign currency worth thousands of dollars from his mother's residential property fund after completing primary school examinations, then squandered the entire amount on entertainment and consumer goods with a companion.

The 13-year-old Bulawayo resident confessed before Magistrate Richard Ramaboea to taking US$1,500 plus R1,500 that his parent had accumulated for land acquisition. Prosecutors said the minor lifted the cash from their Mahatshula North dwelling in September before lavishing funds on apparel, electronic amusements, and alcoholic beverages at an establishment called Hashtag. Authorities retrieved only the container that previously held the money after his mother discovered the disappearance.

The juvenile remains detained at Percy Ibbotson facility, awaiting sentencing in mid-December. His identity remains protected under legal statutes governing minors.
