C major 7 chord notes and voicings

A C major 7 chord contains C, E, G, and B, adding the major seventh to an ordinary C major triad. The C major 7 chord formula is 1-3-5-7, so the B is not decoration. It is the note that turns C major into Cmaj7. The four tones sit directly inside the C major scale and chord structure, with C-E-G forming the tonic triad and B supplying scale degree seven.

If Cmaj7 vs C7 has been tripping you up, keep the seventh straight. Cmaj7 uses B natural, while C7 uses B-flat. The C major 7 chord symbol may appear as Cmaj7, CM7, or CΔ7, while plain C7 means a dominant seventh chord. In the key of C major, the diatonic dominant seventh is G7, made from G-B-D-F. C7 introduces B-flat outside the C major scale and often points toward F or supplies blues color.

There is another naming trap. Asking for the seventh chord in C major can mean the chord built on the seventh scale degree, which is B diminished as a triad or Bm7♭5 when extended to four notes. Cmaj7 is instead the tonic seventh chord, Imaj7. Once those jobs are separated, C major seventh chord notes stop feeling like a strange exception and become a regular stack of thirds.

One chord can have several useful voicings

For a C major 7 chord on piano, root position is C-E-G-B. Put E in the bass, and you have first inversion, E-G-B-C. G-B-C-E is second inversion, while B-C-E-G is third inversion. The bass-note rule is the same principle used with C major chord inversions on piano, except a seventh chord has three inversions because it contains four chord tones.

If you are learning how to play Cmaj7 on piano, you do not have to keep all four notes packed together. A left-hand C with E-G-B in the right hand is still Cmaj7, and spreading the notes can keep the middle register from feeling cramped. A big part of the C major 7 chord sound comes from the C-B major seventh, which becomes a sharper semitone rub when B and C are placed next to each other.

A common C major 7 chord on guitar is x32000. Fret C on the third fret of the A string and E on the second fret of the D string, mute the low E string, then let the open G, B, and high E strings ring. This guitar finger position for C major 7 uses only two fretting fingers while still sounding all four chord tones.

Broken notes make the distinction just as clear. A Cmaj7 arpeggio runs through C-E-G-B, while a plain C major arpeggio on piano uses the triad tones C-E-G. Adding B changes the harmony even if the first three notes are identical.

Cmaj7 works best when its function is clear

A C major 7 chord progression can stay completely inside the key. Cmaj7-Am7-Dm7-G7 gives Imaj7-vi7-ii7-V7, and a C major chord progression on piano can use inversions to keep those four harmonies close under the hand. The chord names stay the same while the individual voices take shorter routes.

G7 does the heavy resolving work in that progression. Its B wants to rise to C, while F can fall to E, giving two semitone movements into Cmaj7. This is why the dominant seventh chord in C major is G7 rather than C7. The tonic Cmaj7 can feel settled while still carrying the gentle friction of its major seventh.

C7 has a different job. Its B-flat sits outside the plain C major scale, but C7 can lead strongly to F because E can rise to F while B-flat falls to A. The difference between Cmaj7 and C7 is only one note on paper, yet that one note changes the chord quality and usually changes what your ear expects next.

Read the bass before naming the inversion

C major 7 chord inversions are determined by the lowest sounding chord tone, not by the shape under one hand. Cmaj7/E, Cmaj7/G, and Cmaj7/B are the first, second, and third inversions. If a lower C sounds underneath an E-G-B-C right-hand shape, the full harmony is back in root position because C is once again the bass.

A slash bass outside C-E-G-B is something else. Cmaj7/D places D underneath a Cmaj7 structure, but D is not a chord tone, so the result is not one of the three inversions. Keeping that distinction clear prevents a common notation mistake and makes chord charts much easier to read when the voicings start spreading across several octaves.
