Canon Tereraho urges unity, peace as elections loom

A bigwig in the Ugandan church is telling everyone to chill out and be nice. John Tereraho, the Chairman of the Church of Uganda's House of Laity, put out a Christmas message online pushing for unity and selfless service as the country heads into a busy political season. He said Christmas is about God's gift of Jesus, who represents hope and peace, not just a party.

Tereraho quoted some Bible verses about Jesus being a counsellor and a prince of peace. He told people to think about whether their actions this past year actually helped others, suggesting that small, kind acts matter more than big shows. He referenced figures like Mother Teresa and Gandhi to make his point that serving others is everyone's job, no matter who they are.

He brought up the church's theme for the next year, which is about being anchored in Christ for unity and stability. Tereraho said this idea is especially important with all the political campaigning and elections coming up. He warned that letting political fights get out of control could really hurt the nation, quoting another Bible verse about conflict causing damage.

His overall message was that since everyone is part of the same human family and created in God's image, they should act like it. He urged Christians to be a force for peace and reconciliation, breaking down barriers instead of making them, as the church and country move into a period filled with political and internal church elections. He finished by asking everyone to stay grounded in their faith to keep things stable and peaceful.
