Western Cape police chief Thembisile Patekile praised retired Major-General Andre Lincoln at his funeral Saturday. Patekile called Lincoln a person who acted rather than just talked about problems. The funeral took place at St James Church with many police officers attending. Lincoln died at age 63 after serving the community for decades. His death came after a long career fighting crime across the Western Cape.
Lincoln headed the Anti-Gang Unit and fought organized crime throughout his career. He served as a former uMkhonto weSizwe operative before joining regular police forces. Community members respected him for his dedication to keeping neighborhoods safe. Gang violence decreased under his leadership during his active years. Lincoln worked with other senior officers to develop new crime fighting strategies.
Patekile worked alongside Lincoln for ten years before his retirement from active duty. The commissioner remembered how Lincoln would listen to ideas from colleagues first. Lincoln would take time to think through problems before making final decisions. He brought brilliant solutions to difficult crime situations facing the province. Other generals attended the service to honor their former colleague.
