CARE Malawi commits K3bn for hunger aid, crisis grows

CARE Malawi just threw over 3 billion kwacha at the hunger crisis hitting the country, after assessment reports showed almost 3 million people are already dealing with serious food shortages that could jump to 4 million when the lean season kicks in. Country Director Pamela Kuwali said her outfit helped nearly a million folks across 20 districts between mid last year and mid this year through cash transfers and programs targeting food security plus climate adaptation. The group worked through their Humanitarian Partnership Platform, which links 11 local NGOs to coordinate responses after cyclones and droughts wrecked harvests.

The vulnerability assessment committee warned that bad weather and sky-high food prices are forcing families into desperate survival tactics while economic instability keeps making things worse. CARE and its partners want the government to pump more money into irrigation systems and early warning mechanisms while pushing social safety nets that protect women and girls who get slammed hardest when disasters roll through.
