Chaudhry confronts delays for Pakistan's new pilgrim ferry

Pakistan will launch its inaugural ferry service after Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry issued immediate implementation orders. Director General Alia Shahid briefed the minister during Friday meetings held in the capital. The current six-month licensing timeline requires reduction to one month through Pakistan Single Window platform integration. Private sector involvement will receive support through flexible financial arrangements and streamlined market entry processes. Regulatory reforms aim to eliminate bureaucratic delays that currently hinder maritime transportation development.

Religious pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq represent the primary target market for this new transportation option. Annual pilgrim numbers reach between 700,000 and 1,000,000 travelers seeking affordable journey alternatives. Early projections suggest 20 percent passenger adoption rates could generate 140,000 to 200,000 ferry users each year. The service promises enhanced security and reduced costs for religious travelers. Economic benefits extend beyond tourism to encompass broader regional connectivity improvements.

Stakeholder consultations continue with private operators and maritime authorities participating in planning discussions. Advanced feasibility studies support the regulatory framework development process. Officials expect pilot service operations to begin within weeks of final approvals. The minister confirmed detailed implementation schedules will receive public release after completion of preparatory phases.
