China Achieves 5 Percent Growth and Sets 2025 Targets

China shared its yearly economic report on Wednesday during its big government meeting. People everywhere paid attention to what they said. Everyone wanted to know how the country did last year and what they planned for 2025. Experts talked with Xinhua News Agency about how China wants to keep growing its economy but make sure it happens the right way.

Last year, China grew by 5 percent, reaching about 134.9 trillion yuan or 18.8 trillion dollars. They helped create almost a third of all economic growth worldwide. Huang Lianghao from the State Council Research Office called these results amazing, considering all the challenges. He pointed out that they also cut carbon pollution per GDP unit by 3.4 percent.

Yuan Yuyu, who makes laws and runs a biotech company in Guangzhou, praised how strong the economy stayed through 2024. He noticed that over 20 million new businesses started up last year. Yuan thinks this shows China keeps building better production systems and moving toward higher-quality growth instead of just making more stuff.

For 2025, China aims for around 5 percent growth again. Experts say this target makes sense because it balances what they need with what they can actually do. This marks the final year of their five-year plan, which started in 2021. Huang believes this goal helps them keep jobs stable and avoid risks.

Jin Li, who advises the government and works as vice president at Southern University of Science and Technology, thinks the target shows smart planning. Despite problems from outside the country, Huang feels good about China's basic economic strength. He mentions new tech breakthroughs and more people buying things as positive signs.

The government wants to create more than 12 million new city jobs next year. They hope to keep city unemployment around 5.5 percent. Huang talks about better job training to fix mismatches between workers and available positions. Jin believes schools must change to prepare students for new industries.

Yuan suggests universities should team up with companies more often. He explains that schools have talented people, but companies have real-world problems to solve. Working together helps create new technology faster. The government plans to focus more resources on helping regular people meet their needs.

China plans to increase retirement benefits for rural people and city residents without jobs by 20 yuan. They promise appropriate raises for other retirees as well. Public hospitals will keep changing to serve people better. Yuan says health matters more to citizens these days. Companies should create better medical products that cost less.

The government will spend 300 billion yuan on special treasury bonds that last many years. This money supports programs where people can trade in old consumer goods for new ones. Huang emphasized that public concerns receive major attention in the report. He mentioned they propose many actions that improve living standards for everyday people.
