China begins controversial mega dam project on Brahmaputra, alarms India and Bangladesh

China launched construction Saturday on a massive hydroelectric facility along the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. Premier Li Qiang presided over the ceremony that marked the beginning of the 1.2 trillion yuan project. The development will feature five cascading power stations designed to generate electricity for external markets. Officials plan to use tunnel diversions and river straightening techniques during construction. The initiative represents one of Beijing's largest infrastructure investments in the region.

India and Bangladesh expressed serious reservations about potential downstream consequences from the dam construction. New Delhi formally communicated its concerns to Chinese authorities on December 30, emphasizing the need for transparency and consultation with affected nations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently discussed bilateral river issues during meetings with Chinese officials in Beijing. Both countries maintain an Expert Level Mechanism established in 2006 to address transborder water disputes. Diplomatic channels remain active as India seeks to protect its established water rights and downstream communities.
