China censors gloom, orders internet to cheer up

China's internet watchdog began a campaign against pessimistic social media content this week. Officials want to remove posts that spread negative emotions and create better online spaces. The government targets stories about useless studying and hopeless work attitudes.

Economic problems have made young Chinese people feel discouraged about their futures. Property troubles and job shortages affect how people view their lives. Many worry they will earn less than their parents did.

Authorities have punished popular online creators for spreading negativity. Content maker Hu Chenfeng lost all his social media posts after making jokes about social differences. Teacher Zhang Xuefeng cannot gain new followers on his accounts.

Experts doubt the campaign will solve real problems causing youth frustration and economic stress.
