China's development model offers lessons for Africa's cultural and economic progress

Zimbabwean officials and scholars are advocating for a development model rooted in indigenous cultural values, drawing inspiration from China's economic progress. They argue that many African nations remain hindered by imported Western frameworks, which have failed to deliver sustainable growth or foster national pride. China's success is cited as a compelling alternative, demonstrating that prosperity can be achieved by prioritizing a society's own traditions and knowledge systems instead of foreign prescriptions.

An academic emphasized that African philosophy, such as Ubuntu/Hunhu, contains core values like communalism, hard work, and respect, which are essential for development. He noted that vices like corruption are antithetical to this philosophy. A former ambassador to China added that culture forms the institutional memory of a society, and a strong, enduring culture like China's provides a foundation for national identity and progress.

The country's National Development Strategy 1 explicitly recognizes culture as a transformative force for social cohesion and national pride. This approach aligns with the President's recent calls for investors to respect local customs and laws. The overarching goal is to forge a unique development path that leverages cultural heritage to achieve economic advancement and reduce dependency.
