Zimbabwe advances toward becoming Africa's major steel producer through the expanding Dinson Iron and Steel Company facility in Mvuma. The US$1.5 billion plant, commissioned in 2022, represents President Mnangagwa's industrial transformation policies. Vice President Kembo Mohadi visited the operation yesterday alongside Midlands Minister Owen Ncube and company chairman Cheng Song. The facility employs more than 2,000 workers while manufacturing 300 tonnes of deformed steel bars daily.
The Chinese-owned subsidiary of Tsingshan Group targets annual production of 600,000 tonnes across various steel products. Zimbabwe previously imported US$1 billion worth of steel annually before this domestic production began. The company earned ISO 9001 certification from the Standards Association of Zimbabwe, demonstrating quality manufacturing standards. Connected projects include Afrochine Smelting's chrome operations and Dinson Colliery's coke production, creating an integrated steel manufacturing network. This industrial development eliminates import dependency while generating foreign currency through exports.
