Chitepo school must go national, says Makombe

Gweru Urban MP Josiah Makombe wants Parliament to turn the Chitepo School of Ideology into a national institution instead of leaving it under Zanu PF control. The opposition legislator chairs the higher education portfolio committee, and he thinks passing actual legislation would make everyone feel comfortable attending instead of viewing it as a propaganda center for the ruling party.

Local Government minister Daniel Garwe pushed back against critics earlier this year by claiming the school serves all Zimbabweans and promotes patriotism rather than partisan politics. The facility got named after liberation fighter Herbert Chitepo, and the government keeps saying it runs a national ideological program guided by President Mnangagwa.
