Chronic Diseases Strain Mozambique's Health Services

Almost half of emergency care needs in Maputo, Beira, and Nampula come from long-term health problems. These include high blood pressure, weight issues, sugar disease, heart attacks, and cancer. The Health Ministry learned this from their big health check called InCRÓNICA 2024. Their National Health Group ran this study across the country. Doctors wanted to see how many people face these health dangers.

Health helper Ivan Manhiça says these lasting health troubles cause two of every three deaths around the world each year. The numbers look bad for Mozambique, as deaths from these issues grew four times bigger between 2007 and 2019. This fact pushed health leaders to use science facts when making health plans. They want to learn why these sicknesses happen and grow worse for many people. Better facts help them make smarter plans for everyone.

The big health check found that one in three grown-ups has high blood pressure, one in twenty adults lives with diabetes, and one in six adults has too much fat in their blood, with women facing this more often. The number of very heavy people has doubled since 2005, rising from about seven to almost fourteen out of each hundred. Women show this weight gain more than men across the nation.

Health bosses worry because heart risk factors grew between 2005 and 2024. Sitting around all day instead of moving doubled from six to fourteen out of each hundred people. Women show this lazy habit more than men. Heavy drinking jumped five times higher, from five to twenty-five out of each hundred. Young people drink more than others. People eat fewer fruits and green foods than before.

The health check shows that 17 out of every 100 adults aged 40 to 60 might die within 10 years. They either already have heart problems or face high risks of getting them soon. Manhiça asks people to avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and using drugs. He wants them to eat good foods in the right amounts each day. Less salt and sugar, more body movement, and calm feelings help you stay healthy.

The head of the National Health Group, Eduardo Samo Gudo, says health checks help leaders make smart choices. This helps all people across the country feel better and live longer lives. This marks the third big health check they have done. They made this one better by asking more people and adding new health areas like breathing troubles, cancer, and brain health. Many helpers from world health groups, schools, and the Canada office joined this work.
