Comilla reels, Gomti River surge nears disaster, says Waliuzzaman

Heavy rains have pushed the Gomti River to dangerous levels across Comilla district. Water officials recorded the river at 8.30 meters on Wednesday morning. The measurement puts the waterway just three meters away from the official danger mark of 11.30 meters. Two straight days of downpours and mountain runoff have caused the rapid rise. Emergency teams have started warning people who live near the riverbanks.

Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman from the Water Development Board watches the situation closely. He works as the executive engineer for the Gomti division. Waliuzzaman told reporters that water levels keep climbing fast. He stressed that residents must stay ready for evacuations. The engineer confirmed that his team tracks the river around the clock.

District officials have asked families to prepare for possible flooding. They want people living near low areas and crumbling banks to pack emergency supplies. Shelter centers stand ready to house displaced residents if waters keep rising. Local authorities have joined forces with water management experts to handle the crisis. The combined response team has started making plans for potential evacuations and rescue operations.
