Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has signed a two-year extension worth $25 million with the team. The deal maintains his current $12.5 million annual salary cap hit from his previous eight-year contract signed in 2017. McDavid's extension follows Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprizov's recent eight-year, $136 million agreement that reset league salary standards.
The Oilers also extended defenseman Jake Walman for seven years at $49 million with a $7 million annual cap hit. Walman joined Edmonton before last season's trade deadline from San Jose, and he contributed 40 points in 65 games between both teams. The 29-year-old added 10 points in 22 playoff games as the Oilers reached the Stanley Cup Final.
General manager Stan Bowman praised McDavid's dedication to bringing a championship to Edmonton. McDavid recorded 100 points last season, and he enters his 11th year with three Hart Trophies. The Oilers begin their season on Wednesday against Calgary.
