Construction near Boyana Swamp faces a halt over violations

Vitosha district authorities have given developers one week to obtain environmental clearances or face an immediate construction shutdown at a contentious site bordering the Boyana wetland. Mayor Zarko Klinkov awaits assessments from regional water and environmental agencies before potentially invoking legal provisions to halt all building activity at the residential project.

Investigators discovered contractors altering a river channel without proper authorization, prompting demands from conservation advocates for swift intervention. The protected marsh supports more than 130 avian species, with 17 appearing on endangered lists, and modifications to drainage patterns threaten neighboring communities with increased flooding risk.

Local officials and environmental groups seek permanent protection for the urban wetland, aiming to convert the area into recreational space while preserving ecological integrity. River corridors remain government property under national law and cannot legally undergo private development.
