Consumer group slams lax cocoa import rules

A consumer watchdog just called out Nigeria's broken import rules. The Centre for Consumer Concern alleges unfair competition for local cocoa and dairy producers due to lax regulations. They claim importers skip critical pre-shipment certification that domestic manufacturers must follow, creating an uneven playing field.

The group links this to wider safety failures, referencing contaminated infant formula recalls globally. They argue these are not isolated cases but a pattern of weak enforcement and corporate negligence. This situation places shoppers at serious risk from non-compliant products entering the market.

Their solution demands immediate action from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. They want a joint task force formed with agencies like NAFDAC, the Standards Organisation, and Customs to harmonize rules and manage product risks. The statement insists brands and importers must prioritize Nigerian consumer safety above all.

The advocacy center ended with a blunt message. Nigerian consumers deserve safe products and fair markets, with regulators acting decisively in the public interest. The call highlights a deepening crisis in consumer protection for imported goods.
