Nakawa court sent Kizza Besigye, Obeid Lutale and Denis Oola to High Court for treason trials. State attorney Richard Birivumbuka told the magistrate that police finished their investigation work. Chief magistrate Christine Nantege made the decision after Besigye's lawyers left the courtroom angry. The defense team wanted the case moved to High Court for bail review. Besigye had spent more than 180 days waiting for trial.
Besigye called the proceedings unfair and walked out with his supporters. Magistrate Nantege continued reading the committal papers anyway. Prosecutors claim the three men planned to overthrow Uganda's government between 2023 and 2024. They held secret meetings across Geneva, Athens, Nairobi and Kampala. Court papers say Besigye worked with a Kurdish intelligence agent known as AW.
Government lawyers claim Besigye asked for weapons and received 5000 dollars for training programs. Police arrested 36 Ugandans before they could complete military training at Kisumu. Besigye and Lutale were captured at Kenya during November 2024. Oola joined their group during October 2023 and sent supportive messages through WhatsApp. All three men face serious charges for failing to report treasonous activities.
