Arsenal's Thomas Partey faces rape charges in Westminster court drama

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey faces serious criminal charges after a three-year police investigation. Authorities charged the Ghana international with five rape counts and one sexual assault count involving three different women. The alleged incidents happened between 2021 and 2022. Partey denies all accusations through his legal team. His lawyer says the player cooperated fully with investigators and wants to clear his name.

Police first arrested Partey back in July 2022 on rape suspicions. The Crown Prosecution Service received the initial case file in December 2024. Investigators submitted updated evidence in April before prosecutors decided to press charges. Sexual assault cases often take years because conviction rates remain extremely low. Only 2.7 percent of reported rape cases result in criminal charges across England and Wales.

The timing raised eyebrows because charges came just days after his Arsenal contract expired. Legal experts say prosecutors make decisions based purely on evidence strength. The Crown Prosecution Service never adjusts timelines to suit defendants or their employers. Media outlets could not name Partey during the investigation due to privacy laws. UK courts protect suspects from identification before formal charges.

Arsenal kept playing Partey throughout the investigation period. The club followed legal advice and maintained safeguarding procedures for staff members. Manchester City suspended Benjamin Mendy during similar charges but paid him millions after his acquittal. Partey must appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on August 5. Any trial would likely happen sometime in 2026.
