Crime has skyrocketed across Bangladesh during the first five months of this year. Police data shows murder cases jumped from 1,265 to 1,587 compared to last year. Armed robberies more than doubled from 147 to 318 cases. Regular robberies climbed from 585 to 821 incidents. Crimes against women and children rose from 7,313 to 9,100 cases.
Kidnappers struck 436 times compared to just 250 cases last year. Burglars hit 1,109 homes versus 1,104 during the same period before. Theft was the only crime that dropped slightly from 3,972 to 3,816 cases. Human Rights Support Society counted 361 rape victims between January and May. Police stations recorded these alarming numbers on their official website.
Recent violent attacks have shocked the nation. Gunmen killed 65-year-old BNP leader Harunur Rashid early Wednesday morning at Dohar upazila. Muggers stabbed 18-year-old student Morshed Alam Tanim on Monday at Chawkbazar. The teenager died Wednesday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after fighting for his life. Robbers also stole 600,000 Saudi Riyals from a money trader at Tejgaon on Tuesday evening.
Police sources blame the crime wave on officers who stopped working properly after last year's political violence. Criminals have attacked police 435 times since January. Many officers from the previous government are dragging their feet on duty. Crime expert Dr Tawohidul Haque says criminals act when they think they can escape punishment.
