The first African Media Awards will be held on 5 December in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to recognize journalists and content creators from across the continent. A consortium of pan African bodies said the event is meant to raise African voices, highlight local stories, and strengthen the region’s place in global media. Entries are open to media outlets, TV stations, bloggers, and independent producers, as long as the work first aired in 2024 and meets the rules for its category. The deadline for submissions is 4 November.
Nine categories cover news, interviews, documentaries, current affairs, and digital video. The top three finalists in every category will be flown to Addis Ababa and housed by the organizers, each receiving N$36,000. Category winners will take home N$108,000 and the Golden Alkebulan trophy. Organizers said the awards are meant to link past struggles for freedom of expression with current efforts to tell African stories to the world.
