CSOs demand stronger accountability for Nigeria’s growth

Civil society groups urged government leaders to strengthen transparency measures during a gathering in Abuja that examined how better oversight could support broader economic progress across Nigeria. More than 400 attendees participated in the third Nigeria Accountability Summit, which focused on making policy implementation more effective through improved monitoring systems at the federal and state levels.

The event highlighted two areas where enhanced scrutiny could yield significant results: job creation paired with economic expansion, and efforts to combat corruption. Organizers from Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative worked alongside 11 partner organizations to host discussions on closing gaps in how public resources are managed and tracked.

Executive Director Olusegun Elemo said the nation faces a pivotal moment despite recent fiscal adjustments and policy changes implemented since 2023. He noted that accountability mechanisms remain underdeveloped even as revenues and borrowing have increased, preventing these funds from delivering tangible improvements in infrastructure, employment opportunities and citizen welfare. Participants from government agencies, private companies, universities and media outlets examined ways to ensure development spending produces measurable benefits for residents.
