FL Studio's Cut Itself setting works with Step Sequencer notes, but it does not cut notes within the same Piano Roll channel. With an 808 pattern in the Piano Roll, enabling Cut Itself can look broken even though FL Studio is behaving as designed.
The confusion makes sense because the control sounds universal. You right-click the 808 in the Channel Rack, enable Cut Itself, and expect each new note to kill the previous one. Piano Roll refuses to cooperate.
Cut Itself is still useful for stopping overlapping 808 notes when the notes come from the Step Sequencer. A Piano Roll bass line needs another control when you want only one voice active, especially with long 808 samples ringing underneath new notes.
Polyphony is the number of simultaneous voices an instrument can play. Setting the maximum to one turns your 808 channel into a one-voice system. The broader technical idea is MIDI voice allocation, where incoming note events are assigned to a limited pool of available voices.
A long sample does not need special treatment here. It can ring for several seconds on its own; the one-voice ceiling only decides what happens when the next MIDI note arrives.
For a normal one-shot 808 pattern, Max Polyphony 1 is often closer to what people expect Cut Itself to do. It works on the Piano Roll note stream, and FL Studio forces the oldest note over the limit to stop immediately. You do not need to shorten every note by eye just to prevent two bass voices from stacking.
An 808 can sound clean in a simple Step Sequencer test, then turn muddy once you write the melody in Piano Roll. The two editors do not trigger the same cutting behavior on a single channel. Moving the pattern from one editor to the other can expose overlap without changing the sample itself.
For an 808 with a drawn-out tail, the distinction matters. You can switch on Mono, see only one musical note being played, and still hear the old low end fading beneath the next hit. It may sound like the polyphony setting failed when the real culprit is release behavior.
Mono also supports note-to-note sliding behavior inside FL Studio, which can be useful when you deliberately want glides. A hard-cut 808 pattern has a different job. If the bass should snap from one note to the next with no shared tail, Max Polyphony 1 is the cleaner setting to test first.

If one Piano Roll note keeps sounding after its note block ends and no new note follows, note duration or envelope behavior is involved instead.
