Cyberpunk 2077’s Act 1 montage was always the plan, devs say

That Cyberpunk 2077 montage was never cut content, the devs insist. The creative director for the sequel, Igor Sarzynski, recently explained the controversial half-year time jump in Act One. He argued that extending V's climb to the top of Night City's merc scene would have been a boring slog. Sarzynski compared it to adding more scenes of Luke Skywalker just farming on Tatooine before his adventure. The main problem was a weak motivation during that early period. The vague goal of getting famous and rich lacks specific stakes or pressure, leading to a meandering experience.

He cited internal data like telemetry and user surveys showing players would likely quit. Building reputation alone is not a clear, measurable story objective. Sarzynski confirmed the montage was always the plan to avoid an unfocused opening. He felt the current structure allowed enough time to bond with Jackie Welles before the pivotal heist mission. Some fans still debate this choice, wishing for a more tangible climb or deeper friendship building. One common suggestion was tying gameplay to the in-game street cred system to make the rise feel earned.

Sarzynski acknowledged that the approach could work but would need a full storyline rewrite to properly contextualize it. Others believe the limited time with Jackie actually made his later story moments more emotionally powerful. While players can spend countless hours on side content in Night City, the developers prioritized a tighter narrative pace for the critical path. This design philosophy might influence the upcoming sequel, which aims to be an even larger game.
