Daren Sammy urges West Indies to show belief and discipline vs India

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has urged his players to remain disciplined and believe in themselves ahead of the second Test against India, which begins on Friday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The appeal comes after the team suffered an innings-and-140-run defeat in the first Test in Ahmedabad, exposing deep-rooted issues within Caribbean cricket.

Sammy said the players must focus on professionalism, preparation, and mental strength to rebuild confidence. He noted that while belief must come from within, consistent training and sharper focus are key to improvement. The coach said he expects progress in attitude and self-belief after stronger practice sessions following the loss.

He emphasized the need for batters to value their wickets and bat longer to post competitive first-innings scores. Sammy said the team must adapt to subcontinental conditions and put together sustained partnerships to compete effectively.

Addressing the sport’s financial struggles in the Caribbean, Sammy acknowledged ongoing efforts by legends like Brian Lara and Sir Vivian Richards to secure sponsorships and long-term investments. He added that resource limitations continue to affect player development but maintained that commitment and resilience can help West Indies rebuild their Test cricket legacy.
