Debrunner snatches gold as India watches in awe

Swiss para-athlete Catherine Debrunner captured gold in the women's 5000m T54 Final at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships on Sunday. The 30-year-old completed the race at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in 12 minutes, 18.29 seconds, and defeated China's Tian Yajuan and Switzerland's Patricia Eachus. Debrunner collected five gold medals and one silver at the Paris Games last year. The athlete began competing at age 8, and earned the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability honor in 2023.

The Swiss competitor praised the stadium during her first visit to India. She noted the newly installed Mondo Track required time to reach optimal speed, but called the venue decent. Debrunner expressed gratitude for her journey in para sports. The champion described meeting fellow athletes over two decades as an enriching experience that shaped her growth beyond athletic achievement.
