Dhaka child rights circus drags Ministry, factory bosses

Government and non-government representatives called for coordinated social programs during a Monday seminar in Dhaka to protect children of garment workers from violence and exploitation. The event, organized by Terre des Hommes Netherlands, Breaking the Silence, and Village Education Resource Center, emphasized building sustainable community-based protection structures. The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Local Government Division, and Department of Social Services were identified as primary agencies for implementation.

Department of Social Services Director General Md Saidur Rahman Khan said children face physical and mental abuse through visible and invisible internet threats. Community participation remains essential for creating safer conditions, as both government and private sectors must collaborate. Nazrul Islam, country manager of TdH NL Bangladesh, noted that families migrating from villages to cities lose traditional support networks, leaving their children in vulnerable situations.

Participants recommended establishing child-friendly protection frameworks in garment areas and creating specialized law enforcement units. Additional proposals included forming a dedicated directorate similar to the Department of Women Affairs and reforming legislation to align with international human rights standards. The seminar brought together government officials, factory representatives, and civil society organizations to address child welfare concerns.
