Dhaka erupts as deadly clashes, curfew, and chaos grip the city in the quota reform war

Bangladesh imposed emergency military rule after violence claimed sixty-seven lives during student demonstrations on July 19, 2024. Protesters demanded government job quota reforms while authorities deployed troops across the nation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's administration announced shoot-on-sight orders as clashes escalated between demonstrators and security forces. Hospital staff struggled with overwhelming casualties while activists torched government buildings and transportation hubs. The military chief warned against exploiting student movements for destructive purposes.

Student coordinators rejected dialogue offers and presented nine demands to officials. Their list required ministerial resignations, police dismissals, and compensation for victims' families. Demonstrators called for banning political student organizations and protecting protesters from harassment. Internet services ceased while universities suspended examinations through July 24. Opposition parties joined the movement as parents formed solidarity chains supporting their children's cause.
