DHS warns California, New York, Illinois, and Tricia McLaughlin

The Department of Homeland Security issued warnings to three Democratic states on Saturday regarding immigration enforcement cooperation. California, New York, and Illinois received demands to assist federal agencies with detaining undocumented immigrants after their release from correctional facilities. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin announced that letters had been dispatched to these states' attorneys general requesting collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. Illinois and New York declined to provide release notifications for criminal immigrants awaiting deportation transfers.

President Trump's administration has intensified border security measures since January while promising mass deportation efforts. McLaughlin criticized sanctuary policies that permit criminal immigrants to return to communities without federal oversight. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency delivered additional correspondence on Friday, threatening involvement from the Department of Justice and other federal partners. Illinois officials rejected receipt of the federal communication entirely.

Federal authorities have detained more than 400,000 undocumented individuals during recent operations. Approximately seventy percent of those apprehended possessed criminal charges or prior convictions, according to agency statistics.
