Doom Dark Ages Smashes 3 Million Players in 5 Days

DOOM: The Dark Ages attracted three million players during its first five days. The game reached this number seven times faster than DOOM Eternal did when it launched. Most people played the new DOOM game through Xbox systems and Game Pass subscriptions. More than two million Xbox users tried the game compared to just 500,000 PlayStation 5 owners. Computer player numbers stayed lower than expected, according to gaming analysts.

Xbox Game Pass helped boost these player totals significantly. Microsoft offers the game as part of its monthly subscription service for console and computer users. The company probably feels happy about having over two million people play one game on their platform. Game Pass changes how companies measure success because subscription players do not always equal direct sales. High player counts do not guarantee high profits when games come through subscription services.

Atomfall provides another example of Game Pass popularity. That game reached 1.5 million players during its opening weekend and two million players within one month. Most Atomfall players also used Xbox systems rather than other gaming platforms. DOOM: The Dark Ages faces a real test beyond just player numbers. Success depends on bringing new subscribers to Xbox Game Pass and selling copies on PlayStation and other non-Xbox systems.
