Doom Dark Ages Couldnt Exist Without Ray Tracing

According to id Software staff, ray tracing technology made the new DOOM game possible. The Dark Ages features maps much larger than earlier DOOM titles. Developers needed quick ways to create content for these massive areas. The ray tracing system lets artists see lighting effects immediately rather than waiting hours.

Billy Khan from id Software called this instant feedback a wizzywig because creators view exactly what players will experience. Previous games required developers to wait as computers processed lighting effects. The team added real-time destruction effects because ray tracing handles changing environments naturally. These features show how powerful the main character becomes throughout the story.

Assassin's Creed: Shadow faced similar challenges with its lighting systems. That game would have needed two extra years just for traditional lighting methods. Ray tracing saves time during game creation phases. Major studios will likely adopt ray tracing more often because it speeds up work. DOOM: The Dark Ages came out last week on computers and game consoles.
