Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale urged African countries on Tuesday to champion equitable climate financing and technology transfer while building domestic research capabilities. Duale addressed the fourth Pan-African Conference on Environment, Climate Change, and Health in Nairobi and emphasized that Africa must position itself as an innovator rather than a victim of climate change. The secretary stated that climate change represents the century's greatest health threat and referenced recent floods and droughts in Kenya and East Africa as evidence of the climate-health connection.
Dr. Jeremiah Mushosho from the World Health Organization warned that Africa faces extreme vulnerability because of underdevelopment and limited adaptation capacity. The organization reported that cholera outbreaks in 2023 resulted from extreme weather events such as floods and cyclones. Dr. Joanes Atela from the Africa Research and Impact Network said poor air quality causes seven million premature deaths annually and affects Africa disproportionately. Conference organizers selected Harnessing Science, Policy and Partnerships for Environmental Sustainability and Climate-Health Resilience as the event theme.
