Dutch court upholds asylum denial for Clifford-Carlos

A Dutch court has rejected asylum protection for American transgender woman Veronica Clifford-Carlos while acknowledging deteriorating circumstances for transgender individuals in the United States. The tribunal determined she does not face systematic denial of protection or vital services despite recognizing concerning developments.

Clifford-Carlos, who lived in San Francisco, reported receiving death threats and experiencing discriminatory hospital treatment. Her legal representative compared American conditions to Germany during the Nazi regime's early years. Amsterdam judges nevertheless maintained the United States designation as a safe origin country under European Union regulations, though procedural errors require immigration officials to reassess her application with fresh evidence of persecution risk.

The Trump administration has implemented extensive restrictions on transgender rights, including military service exclusions, minor transition care prohibitions, passport gender marker limitations, and sports participation bans. Federal agencies have additionally eliminated terminology referencing gender identity from scientific publications and official communications.
