EALS Demands Immediate Action on East Africa's Disappearances

The East Africa Law Society wants people who have been kidnapped in East Africa to be freed right away. The group says there have been more human rights abuses in the region lately. They want the police to arrest suspects legally.

The president of the law society, Ramadhan Abubakar, said abductions are a big problem in the East African Community. He mentioned that Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and other countries in the area are having human rights issues.

Mr. Abubakar pointed out that kidnapping people goes against what the East African Community stands for. The heads of law societies from several East African countries agree with him.

Most countries in East Africa have signed agreements that say they won't allow torture. They are supposed to look into abuses and punish those responsible. Mr. Abubakar says the nations must protect their people from being tortured or taken away.

He wants the countries to approve a special agreement about protecting people from going missing. He's also asking for a meeting of leaders to find ways to stop abductions and killings.

The law society leader says governments should have independent groups that can investigate kidnappings. He wants them to put an end to taking people across borders.

The East Africa Law Society works with lawyer groups across East Africa. It is an important part of the East African Community. The society also has a special status with the African Commission on Human and People's Rights.
