Workers are raging over a rushed plan to privatize the power company. The Public Utility Workers Union, part of the Trades Union Congress, strongly opposes a government push for Private Sector Participation at the Electricity Company of Ghana. PUWU reacted to media reports about appointing a transaction advisor before Christmas. The union said this move shocks them and betrays earlier government assurances. It undermines an existing turnaround program agreed with the Ministry of Energy, ECG management, and the workers themselves, designed as an internal reform instead of privatization.
The union stated ECG workers showed exceptional commitment over five months, improving revenue, cutting system losses, and stabilizing power supply. PUWU noted these gains were acknowledged by officials like Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Energy Minister John Abdullai Jinapor. They see no transaction needing an advisor, calling the step premature and possibly driven by external interests wanting control of this strategic national asset. PUWU insists any decision must follow due process with transparency and full consultation. They demand that the government suspend all PSP actions, let the current reform finish, and properly evaluate its results first.
