Edo Muslims Rage Over Schools Handed to Catholics

Muslim leaders across Edo State criticized Governor Monday Okpebholo for giving eight schools back to Catholic groups. The governor met with Bishop Gabriel Dunia and approved returning schools to missionaries from the Edo North area. These schools served students from different religious backgrounds and had been run with public money for years. Muslim groups called the decision unfair and said it ignored other religious communities.

The affected schools received public funding for repairs and improvements over time. Many of the school grounds came from local communities that donated land for education. Muslim organizations said the governor failed to talk with all religious leaders before making his choice. They worry about Muslim students and teachers who might face problems under new management.

Religious leaders questioned whether Muslim students could wear hijabs or study Islamic subjects at the returned schools. The groups asked what would happen to Muslim teachers working at these locations. Leaders from different Muslim councils promised to meet with the governor about reversing his decision. They want him to consider how his choice affects all citizens regardless of their faith backgrounds.
