Education ministry forms task force for free tertiary study by 2026

Namibia's education ministry created a special team to plan free college education. The government wants all university students to attend classes without paying fees starting in 2026. Executive director Mbuma Haitengela told the public about the new team on Tuesday. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah promised free higher education during her April speech to the nation. The ministry picked experts to design the plan for making college education cost nothing.

The task force must create rules about money and policies for the new system. Officials expect the complete plan to be ready before August ends. The team will talk to different groups about making the changes work properly. Government leaders want to make sure the free education program succeeds across the country. The ministry plans to meet with students and college administrators about the upcoming changes.

Haitengela asked current students to keep working hard during 2025 classes. College applications for next year will happen the same way as before. Students must still pay fees as usual when they apply to public colleges. The ministry will announce new rules about payments later. Nothing changes for students applying to universities until officials finish the roadmap.
